single mom concerned about her family's safety when service industry personnel
were sent to her home. Who were these people? Had anyone checked to see if any
of them had a criminal history of any kind? Was her son safe to open the door
for the pizza guy? Was she safe from rape when the air conditioning serviceman
came into her home? Were her valuables safe from the carpet guy?

MacGowan began to ask these companies if they did a national criminal background
check on their employees and subcontractors. She was alarmed to find that the
majority of companies did not do any check other than what was required of them
by insurance, such as a moving violation record. Further investigation proved
to her that many pizza companies did not check if their delivery people had criminal
histories. In fact, a couple of the local pizza parlors in town had hired sexual
offenders and they were delivering to homes! The more Sandie learned, the more
she made the commitment to open a business, offering affordable, reliable background
screenings. The company that started in her home with a few
customers has moved to an office building and now covers the United States. The
scope has changed from the service industry to include anyone who hires a person
to work in any aspect of employment, i.e., home health care, manufacturing, construction,
and more. Everyone who works in an office, on a job site, or has someone entering

statutes holding businesses responsible for doing due diligence on their employees.
They will be held accountable in court if no such screening was done and an employee
or subcontractor performs an illegal act against a customer or fellow employee.
This can cost thousands of dollars, even closing down businesses due to lawsuits.
Businesses need to seriously consider the safety of their employees, their customers,
and their bottom line. Businesses should be doing a national criminal background
screening on every employee and subcontractor they hire. Does
this mean that no one should hire a person with a criminal past? Absolutely not!
It does mean that they should make sure someone with theft in their background
is not left to temptation by sending them in alone to someone's home, or that
a sex offender is not hired by a child care center, or perhaps a person convicted
of battery is not made a supervisor without careful consideration. MacData

when hiring for certain positions. While everyone should have the opportunity
to work, everyone should also be able to feel safe and confident that the person
standing on the other side of their door isn't there to harm them.
